About CATA
| Mission Statement |
Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA) is a Joint Municipal Authority serving the six Centre Region municipalities, Bellefonte Borough, Spring Township and Benner Township. Our mission is to deliver safe, reliable, accessible and affordable transportation, provided in a courteous and environmentally, fiscally and socially responsible manner. |
The Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA) is a joint municipal authority formed under the “Municipal Authorities Act of 1945”. CATA was first incorporated on May 17, 1974 and then reorganized into its current format on February 5, 1982 by five local municipalities: the Borough of State College and the four surrounding townships: Patton, Ferguson, Harris and College.
It was formed for the purpose of providing public transportation services within the the boundaries of its member municipalities. Subsequent agreements with the Borough of Bellefonte, Spring Township, Benner Township and Halfmoon Township have allowed for service extensions to Bellefonte, Pleasant Gap and Stormstown.
Board of Directors
CATA is governed by a five member Board of Directors comprised of one appointed member from each of those original five member municipalities. Board meetings are held monthly and generally begin at 4:00 PM on the fourth Monday of every month at the State College Borough Building, 243 S. Allen Street, Room 241, State College, PA. Budget and Annual Report
CATA's budget year runs concurrent with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's fiscal year: July 1 - June 30. The budget includes background information on the Authority, a recap of the previous year, policy considerations, a work plan with goals for this year, and a long-term outlook that includes five-year operating budget projections. The Annual Report provides a snapshot of CATA's various accomplishments over the previous fiscal year, and an outline of the organization’s goals for the coming year. Click here for more information and access to both the current and previous year's budgets and annual reports.
CATABUS Ridership
CATA has developed a program to provide detailed, current CATABUS ridership data right here on our web site. The program continuously generates ridership totals for several different periods of time and then breaks those totals down further by route and fare category. Click here for more information and access to those totals.
CATA Compressed Natural Gas Program
In 2005 CATA became the first transportation agency on the East Coast to have replaced its entire fleet with one that operates solely on clean compressed natural gas.
