How to Ride the Bus - Stops, Boarding/Deboarding, Paying Fares and Rider Conduct
If you have never ridden the bus or not used one recently, here’s a quick and easy lesson.
After checking the bus schedule of the route you want to use to find the closest bus stop, go to that stop. CENTRE LINE, LOOP and LINK bus stop locations are marked by bus stop signs. CENTRE LINE bus stop locations also include an information holder mounted directly below it showing the times that route serves that stop. Remember, buses stop only at these posted bus stop signs.

WHICH ONE’S MY BUS?

Look at the headsign on the front of the bus. The letter will identify the route followed by a description of its primary destination. These correspond to the letter and destination description found in both the RIDE GUIDE and individual schedule brochures.

BOARDING:

  • As the bus approaches, stand close to the bus stop and signal the driver.
  • Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop, and then board at the front door of the bus. If you are riding on a CENTRE LINE bus, please have your exact fare, token, or pass ready to show the driver as you board the bus. Remember, drivers cannot give change.

PAYING YOUR FARE (CENTRE LINE):
The fareboxes accept coins, tokens, bills and passes with a magnetic stripe on the back.

  • CASH & TOKENS - Coins and tokens get dropped into the left slot and bills are deposited into the slot on the right. The farebox will “beep” to tell you and the driver that the correct fare has been paid. If you have paid with cash or tokens and need to transfer to another CENTRE LINE bus to complete your one-way trip, ask the driver for a transfer when you board. Transfers are free.
  • PASSES - If you have a CATA ONEPASS, CATA Apartment Pass, Penn State Ride For Five pass or any other pass that includes a black stripe on the back, it is “swiped” through the reader in front of the coin slot on the farebox when you board. These passes have have magnetic stripes on the back of the pass that the farebox must read to be accepted as fare.
Using your Onepass, Apartment Pass or Ride-for-Five Pass
Before you board have your bus pass in hand with the black stripe facing you and the front of the pass facing the driver. That's the way it goes through the farebox.
When you get to the farebox, quickly swipe your pass through the top of the farebox from right to left (towards the rear of the bus) in one smooth motion. There is a diagram on the top of the farebox showing which way to hold it and which direction to swipe it.
If the pass is valid, the farebox will beep the same as it does now when the correct fare is paid. If the pass is not yet valid, no longer valid because it has expired or no longer valid because it has been replaced the farebox will not accept it and you will be required to pay the fare.

RIDER CONDUCT:
CATA asks that you respect the rights of other riders and follow the rules below. Violators may be subject to exclusion from service, fine, or arrest. Prohibited conduct includes, but is not limited to, the following:
  • Refusing to pay proper fare

  • Harassing drivers

  • Using Profanity

  • Drinking alcoholic beverages

  • Drinking (except from a covered container)

  • Smoking

  • Carrying weapons

  • Playing music that can be heard by others

  • Sleeping, lying down, or occupying more than one seat

  • Disturbing other riders with loud, harmful, or harassing behavior

  • Putting feet on the seats

DE-BOARDING

Shortly after the bus passes the stop before yours, pull the yellow cord located directly above or alongside your seat. A “Stop Requested” light and/or bell at the front of the bus will let the driver know that you want to de-board. When the bus comes to a complete stop, exit the bus.

ACCESSIBLE SERVICE
Each of CATA’s fifty-two CENTRE LINE and LOOP/LINK buses are fully-accessible and accommodate wheelchairs.

ANIMALS ON THE BUS
Animals are permitted to ride the bus with their owner if the animal is in an approved pet carrier or is muzzled. The only exceptions to this policy are service animals.
