FALL 2007 SERVICE CHANGES
Every year CATA service changes are implemented concurrent with the start of Fall semester. If further refinement of those changes is necessary or if development and road changes that occur during the Fall require mid-year changes, they are then implemented in January concurrent with the start of Spring semester.
  • The new LOOP and LINK FULL SERVICE schedule will begin operating on Saturday August 25. (The last day of the current SUMMER SERVICE schedule will be Friday August 24) Several service changes will be implemented on the LOOP & LINK concurrent with the start up of FULL SERVICE schedule this year. Those changes are noted below along with links to the new schedules.
  • On Monday August 27 CATA CENTRE LINE FULL SERVICE will resume. A number of service changes will be implemented concurrent with the start up of FULL SERVICE schedule this year. Those changes are noted below along with links to the new schedules. Changes from the current schedules will take affect on thirteen of CATA's seventeen CENTRE LINE routes.
  • Saturday September 1 CATA's Game Day Football Shuttle service will also begin operating again this year. There are no changes to that service from what operated for last year's home games.
  • On Monday September 3 (Labor Day holiday) CENTRE LINE service will still be operating under the current FULL SERVICE schedule but, as according to the schedule, will be operating Sunday service. That means that only the routes that operate on Sunday, the M, N, R & V routes, will operate that day and they will be will running on their Sunday schedule. The LOOP & LINK will operate the new FULL SERVICE schedule that day.

Fall 2007 RIDE GUIDES
The 82 page book includes all of this Fall's service changes and is your complete source of CATA schedule information. The new Fall 2007 version is available now on all of our buses, at both of our offices and will also be included in the Friday August 31 Centre Daily Times.

The LOOP/LINK and these twelve CENTRE LINE Routes will have schedule changes starting Monday August 27:

C, H, K, N, NV Express, P, R, S, V, W & X

Details of the changes along with links to the new schedules are provided below. The remaining five CENTRE LINE routes (A, B, F, M & UT) are unchanged and will continue to operate as they currently do now.

LOOP and LINK service changes starting Saturday August 25, 2007:

The LOOP and LINK Fall Semester 2007 FULL SERVICE schedule will start on Saturday August 25, 2007. The last day of the SPECIAL SUMMER 2007 SERVICE schedule will be Friday August 24. The two most significant changes for this year are:

• BREAK and SUMMER SERVICE levels have been combined into one new REDUCED SERVICE level
• The countdown clock will be used on the WHITE LOOP

There are currently three different levels of LOOP/LINK service: FULL, BREAK and SUMMER SERVICE. FULL SERVICE on the LOOP/LINK generally operates during the same time period as CENTRE LINE FULL SERVICE.

The frequency of LOOP/LINK service during BREAK SERVICE has been increased to match what operates during SUMMER SERVICE consolidating the SUMMER and BREAK service periods for this upcoming year into one period called REDUCED. The new LOOP/LINK REDUCED SERVICE period will now operate during a similar time period as our CENTRE LINE REDUCED SERVICE. CENTRE LINE, and now LOOP/LINK service, will operate on the REDUCED SERVICE schedule during the Thanksgiving break, the holiday season between Semesters, during Spring Break and all Summer.

A "countdown" clock will be installed at our downtown Schlow Library office to maintain frequency and assist with bus spacing issues on the WHITE LOOP. The clock approach was implemented on the BLUE LOOP last Fall and has proved to be effective.

CENTRE LINE service changes effective Monday August 27, 2007:

C Route (Houserville):
The departure time from the first INBOUND timed stop (Penn Hills) on the first trip of the day has been moved back four minutes from 7:17 a.m. to 7:21 a.m..

H (Toftrees), K (Cato Park) & W (Valley Vista) Routes

This past January we made a mid-year adjustment on the Inbound W Route and Outbound K Route weekday schedule. We moved the timetable on both routes up three minutes to help riders who needed to be out at Cato Park on the hour. The H, W and K Route service is interlined like the N, V and R service. This fall we moved up by three minutes the other four “legs” of the interlined service:

  • On the H Route, all weekday Inbound and Outbound trips, except the two extra afternoon Rush Hour trips (which need to depart from downtown and campus at specific times to line up with the end of work shifts), have been moved up three minutes.
  • On the W Route, all weekday Outbound trips, except the two extra afternoon Rush Hour trips (which need to depart from downtown and campus at specific times to line up with the end of work shifts), have been moved up three minutes.
  • On the K Route, all Inbound trips, including Saturday, have been moved up three minutes.

A couple of bus stop changes have also been made on the H and K Routes. The two bus stops at the Fox Hollow Road entrance to the Village at Penn State (H Route) have been removed along with the stop on campus on Curtin Road at Rec Hall. A new stop has been added on Park Center Blvd. (K Route) immediately prior to the second entrance to Bank of America (to serve The Landings neighborhood.)

N (Martin St.), R (Waupelani Dr.), V (Vairo Blvd.) & N/V EXPRESS (Martin St./Vairo Blvd.) & R EXPRESS (Waupelani Dr.) Routes:

Increased ridership and traffic in the corridors served by each of these routes has really hampered the ability to maintain the advertised schedule over the last few years, particularly during the peak traffic periods. As a result, the timetables on all three routes have been restructured and the N/V and R Express service has been changed to better coordinate and integrate those routes with their corresponding underlying routes. More time has been added into the schedule for each route so that the busses can remain on schedule more consistently and to allow the V Route to be extended to serve the "northern" end of Oakwood Avenue. While the new daytime frequencies on these routes will now range between every 32 and every 40 minutes.

  • All Inbound NV Express trips have been converted to "short" N and V trips which will operate in between and with the regular N and V trips. In both cases, these short trips will operate only as far as Curtin Road just as the Inbound N/V Express trips did.
  • The Outbound NV Express service has been retained but the departure times from campus and downtown have been changed so that all NV trips will operate along side AND in between all afternoon Outbound N and V trips. This change provides direct service from campus to both Martin Street AND Vairo Blvd. approximately every 18 minutes from 12 noon - 7:00 p.m. In addition, the "EXPRESS" term has been dropped from the NV Route as it will now serve all stops along the route. This will allow someone to board anywhere along the route on it's way out to Vairo Blvd.
  • The R Express Route has been eliminated and all of the trips converted to "short" R trips used to improve frequency the same way the new N/V Express service has been deployed. "Short" R trips will operate only as far as Curtin Road just as the former Inbound R Express trips did and all afternoon (Outbound) R Express trips have been converted to regular R trips and scheduled in between the existing trips. Similar to the N and V Route changes, this will improve frequency to approximately every 18 minutes during the peak travel periods.

P Route (Scenery Park/Medical Center/Airport):

The P Route has been extended out to University Park Airport this Fall. While the preference is to operate that extension all day long, an incremental step in that direction will happen starting august 27. Therefore the P Route will start out by operating six trips to the Airport, and six more from the Airport, every weekday during the time periods that best match up with the "clusters" of arrivals at departures from the Airport. This is a couple trips very early in the morning, a couple more during the late afternoon, and then a late night trip. Extending the P Route provides a direct connection between the Airport, campus, downtown State College and the many hotels along South Atherton Street. The extension adds a second bus on the route which improves the service on the existing portion of the P Route by offering earlier and later P Route service to existing riders while slightly improving the 70 minute afternoon frequency during the time that the new afternoon Airport trips operate.

S Route (Science Park):

Last fall about ten minutes was added into the timetable to accommodate for the anticipated delay during the year-long reconstruction of Science Park Road. With construction completed, this fall the timetable has been changed back to close to what it was prior to the road project. The construction resulted in some bus stops being moved around in the area as new concrete pads at each stop location were built as part of the road project.

X Route (Bellefonte/Pleasant Gap):

The routing through Bellefonte Borough has been further streamlined so that the number of service miles traveled within the Borough coincide the amount of local share contribution that Bellefonte Borough is willing to commit to the service for this upcoming year. All the trips that currently bypass Governor's Gate (mid-day weekday trips and all Saturday trips) will now also bypass Parkview Heights by using Wilson Street between Blanchard and Lynn Streets. The change will result in a core route through Bellefonte that expands during the traditional commute trips to serve Governor's Gate apartments and Parkview Heights. All of these “shorter trips” will now also leave the Mall five minutes later which will allow for better transfer connections with the M Route.. Note that the Rush Hour or traditional commuter trips are not affected by this change.

A couple of bus stop changes have also been made on the X Route. A pair of stops in each direction have been added along the Benner Pike near Confer Ford. A new stop has been added on Steeplechase Drive between Tealbriar Dr. and N. Main Street. The pair of stops on Harrison Rd. near Sunset Ave. have been eliminated and the pair around the corner on S. Main have been moved closer to Sunset.
